# Sign Spinners, Twirlers & Flippers: What Are They Called?

Updated September 15, 2026

A sign spinner is a promotional performer who holds, waves, twirls or flips a sign to draw attention to a business and direct people toward its entrance. Sign twirlers and sign flippers describe the same kind of advertising, with the name emphasizing a different movement.

## What do the different names mean?

- Sign spinners: performers who combine movement, tricks and clear sign displays to promote a business.

- Sign twirlers and sign flippers: terms that emphasize spinning or tossing the sign. They are commonly used for the same service.

- Sign holders: people displaying a promotional sign, sometimes without tricks. When hiring a person, search for human sign holders or sign holders for hire; sign holders can also mean display hardware.

- Human directionals: people using signs to guide passing traffic toward an entrance, sales office or event.

- Sign wavers and sign walkers: people waving a sign or moving along a promotional route. Human billboards is a broader term for people displaying advertising.

## Which service should a business ask for?

Describe the goal as well as the name: a grand opening, a retail sale, an apartment leasing promotion or help finding a hidden storefront. A useful campaign combines a readable message, an appropriate location and performers who point customers in the right direction.
